FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why are you working in the Dominican Republic?
Jen Winter, Paradigm Foundation’s Executive Director, has had a heart for the people of the Dominican Republic since she traveled there in the fall of 2013 on a church mission trip. Her experiences serving the ultra poor in the neighborhood of Quisqueya left her with a strong desire to do more to meet the physical and spiritual needs of those living there. After sharing her desire to do more with her husband, Tim, it became clear that the Lord was leading them use their construction business, Paradigm Building Group, to serve the people of the DR. Soon after, they partnered with Empowering Action who had already been established in the community to help them expand upon construction efforts.
In addition, the needs are great in the DR as nearly half of the 11 million people live below the poverty line. Seventy percent of children never finish primary school, and most people survive on less than $1.25 per day. That devastating level of poverty so close to the U.S. elicits action and offers Paradigm Foundation the opportunity to use their investment of time and financial support to make a greater impact. While the Paradigm Foundation’s initial efforts will focus on the DR, we hope to serve other countries in the near future.
Does Paradigm Foundation work in other countries?
While initial efforts were focused in the Dominican Republic, we began constructing homes in Kenya in 2019 and hope to eventually build homes around the world for those in need.
How are families chosen?
Paradigm Foundation works through our in-country partners to leverage their church networks to help find home candidates. Those pastor networks then pray and work to identify and nominate the family in need. The family is then evaluated by the in-country partner along with Paradigm Foundation and measured unknowingly, against the World Bank poverty scorecard to ensure we are serving the most in need.
It is imperative to our ministry that we work through pastor networks, so that needs are perceived as being met through the church, eliminating a hand-out mentality. It also helps to remove favoritism among the community and ensures the most urgent needs are being met.
How do you measure poverty?
Poverty is complex and we try to be careful to not compare when it comes to designation, as it devalues human life. However, we follow international standards as set by the World Bank score card and UN poverty index. Some of the factors taken into consideration are: environmental condition, level of health and access to medical care, extent of education, number of people living in a single home, inadequate access to clean water and public services.
What are you building?
Paradigm Foundation’s primary focus will be building multi-room homes (est. 520 sq. ft.) for the ultra poor, but we also consider other projects such as home repair, churches, orphanages, separate bathrooms, and purchase furniture to fulfill additional needs.
How much does a house cost?
For just $8,500, Paradigm Foundation can provide a new, multi-room home for a family. In an effort to provide a comprehensive solution, the home also includes a bathroom, clean-cooking stove, electricity (when possible), a concrete floor, and furniture. Visit our Donation Page to learn more.
